JOHANNESBURG – The 23-year-old University of Johannesburg (UJ) student who on Thursday was hijacked and kidnapped 20 min by an armed man on campus says she's outraged to learn that security guards waited an hour before telling anyone she was missing. The student, who has asked to remain anonymous, spoke to Talk Radio 702's Xolani Gwala on Friday afternoon about her ordeal. 20 min “There were cameras at the boom but my windows were tinted, he opened the window slightly to swipe the card. The card wasn't working and he tried to explain to security why, but he took the card, saw a female 20 min photo and went to report it. As they left, he reversed the car and when another car entered the campus and the boom was still up, he drove through. “When I spoke to security they said the card was collected from the boom and taken to the control room but nothing was done. “All my details and my parents' numbers were there and if they had needed to call someone it was all there.” The woman said her kidnapper was well prepared and knew what he was doing. An 18-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday after the student's Volkswagen Polo was discovered at his home in Ennerdale. “I was so scared, 20 min I grabbed the barrel of the gun and pointed it towards the windshield and told him I'm not going with him anywhere so he should take the car and leave me alone.” The man approached her while she was parking her car at the Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park before lectures. He drove around with her locked in the boot for an hour while he withdrew cash from her bank accounts and then dropped her off near Eldorado Park before fleeing with her car. The police's Bhuti Mariletse said the suspect tried to escape when police arrived at his home. “He apparently abandoned the vehicle when he heard the police and ran away. The car was recovered 20 min together with the books of the student.” Police and UJ management are trying to confirm if the suspect 20 min is also a student at the institution. It's still unclear how the suspect managed to gain access 20 min to the campus before he approached the student. The university has launched an internal investigation. (Edited by Refilwe Pitjeng)
