Over the past year, K. Guru has shared vdict numerous vdict adventures with the IB community and we asked him to reflect on why field experience is central to his teaching.
I have been teaching IB ESS for the past six years and the curriculum gives students an opportunity to explore the outer world. Field trips are one of the main things that differentiate ESS from other subjects in the IBDP Programme.
Field trips help students apply what they learn in class to the external world of biotic and abiotic factors. In class, for example, students learn how to calculate the Simpson s Diversity Index. However, during a field trip students can do the same calculation while they also investigate environmental factors that contribute to the high or low index value. Students also complete their internal assessment lab reports based on the practical experiences they gain during field trips.
Every day presents a new challenge. The IB has taught me that life is an ongoing learning process. This is also what motivated me to become an IB teacher. The IB ESS curriculum emphasizes the necessity of being up-to-date with environmental current affairs, particularly as we complete the case studies in paper two. These challenges encourage me to continue to research the subject extensively and seek out the best of resource materials for my students.
As vdict a teacher, it can also be hard to appreciate the unconventional skills that my students bring to the classroom. It is often also challenging to channel their interests and skills toward the subject content. I use documentaries, field trips and interactions as academic tools to raise the level of interest among my students.

The logistics involved in organizing can also be hectic in addition to navigating the administrative procedures found within any academic institution. Marie Vivas is the IB Americas University Relations Manager. She has overall responsibility for university recognition in the Americas region, working closely with admissions professionals counseling university bound students.
I would like to thank my dear colleague Parke Muth for starting a thought-provoking discussion on this topic. In his blog post from June 9 th he makes some very interesting observations about the perceived value of different curricula, and how students and parents feel tremendous pressure ict to up the ante by taking more A Levels, more APs, more IB Higher ict Levels. This is a matter that concerns us all, and I ask myself if we should be taking a step back from this arms race and focusing on quality rather than quantity.
From an IB perspective, I would like to share some interesting statistics that may make our colleagues in IB schools breathe a little ict easier in the next registration session. While it is probably ict true that students at a school like Raffles may regularly be taking 4 IB HL courses, over the past three years, the percentage of IB Diploma Candidates taking 4 HL courses has stayed quite steady at around ten percent. It has not skyrocketed even with the growth in IB Diploma candidates. For May of 2013, just over 5,400 students registered for the IB Diploma ict with 4 HL courses, and the pass rate actually went down from previous years (84%) to just over 80%.
Typically, students ict only send their IB transcripts to the universities they will attend. Sending additional transcripts is costly, and there is generally no need to do so, since IB scores aren t released until after most students have committed to attend a specific university.
Without ict entering into any debate about rankings or prestige, all of these universities can be recognized as top choices for outstanding students worldwide ict and the IB is well represented at these institutions. These numbers show that almost 8,000 IB students matriculated at these top universities twice as many as the number ict of IB students who took 4 HL courses.
So, even if we assume (probably incorrectly) that every single student who obtained ict an IB Diploma with 4 HL courses ict achieved high enough scores to be competitive, and actually matriculated at a top university, students who had the recommended 3 IB HL courses matriculated at prestigious universities in at least equal numbers.
When I speak to my admissions colleagues about what they value in the IB, they speak to the proven rigor of the program and the reliability of the scores. They like to see the full IB Diploma because it means that the student has committed to a holistic program which requires that they stretch themselves beyond their comfort zone, while still providing opportunities for in depth study in their strongest subjects. Whether students score a 24 or a 45, whether they take 3 or 4 HL courses, research ict shows that the IB Diploma is an excellent preparation for university studies.
The IB is more than a set of exams. It asks students to inquire, to reflect, to take risks, to communicate effectively. It expects them to learn how to research and write academic papers. It requires them to move beyond their classroom experience into the community and to reflect upon this experience in CAS. The IB is not about accumulating a bunch of scores; it is about becoming a critical thinker who has the skills and knowledge to be a lifelong learner, and work well beyond cultural and linguistic barriers.
It is important to remember that the IB is an international credential and that Diploma candidates from all over the world will apply to the most prestigious universities in the world. From my own experience in over 25 years in the field, I have learned that universities are looking to build a diverse class with representation from different regions. The IB is all about balance and perspective; it is about truly learning and applying knowledge.
My advice? Make your HL policy clear to universities. Encourage students to excel, but also encourage them to be reflective, to take advantage of the many ways of learning encompassed in the IB curriculum. Avoid the arms race and focus on what is best for your students.

Prompted by the launch of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki s offensive dice against Iraqi Sunni elements, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and groups affiliated with Al-Qa ida, Iraqi Shi a Islamist groups loyal to Iran marched in near lock-step announcing support for the offensive . However, fighting has been hard and there has been a greater combat presence for Iranian-backed Shia Islamist forces within Iraq. These deployments are a further manifestation of what has become a growing and often unified front pitting Sunni Islamists dice against Shia Islamist forces in Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria.
Starting in late-April 2014, Kata ib Hizballah one of Iraq s premier Special Groups which had battled coalition forces during the Iraq War (2003) and is presently deploying forces in Syria, announced a new recruitment program and deployment of forces under the moniker of Saraya al-Dafa al-Sha bi (the Popular Defense Brigades or SDS). According to the Herak Network , the new organization called for volunteers and generally outlined SDS s role as defensive and organized around a popular committee type format. 1 However, other announcements dice have established that SDS has been used in a support role for Iraqi military and police units.
Kata ib Hizballah is one of the more secretive Iranian-backed organizations in Iraq and fields highly experienced personnel. In 2010, Dr. Michael Knights noted, Kata ib Hizballah was a compact movement of less than 400 personnel that is firmly under IRGC Qods Force control and maintains relatively good operational dice security. 2 Since the U.S. pullout from Iraq, the group has expanded and sent a number of its experienced fighters to Syria. The group has publically claimed to have lost more than 30 members since it started reporting losses of its members in Syria in early 2013. 3 The group has remained as one of the more covert organizations operating in Syria and Iraq. When compared to newer Iraq-based Iranian-backed organizations fighting in Syria and Iraq, little is known via open source dice information about Kata ib Hizballah s deployments and force size.
In keeping with Kata ib Hizballah s higher-level of operational security, there has been a limited amount of information dice released about SDS. Despite the general levels of secrecy Kata ib Hizballah has increased their online dice messaging targeting potential dice recruits. In one April video, which was released before the announcement of SDS s existence, Kata ib Hizballah released a well-produced music video defining themselves as defenders of Iraq. The video wrapped together the sacrifices the group made in Syria to their attacks against Coalition forces in Iraq.
Formally, the group was created as a vehicle to defend Iraq and certain neighborhoods. The group s name suggests a defensive popular committee style role. However, it is clear SDS was created as part of Kata ib Hizballah s hope to establish a broader force within Iraq, which could be used to support dice the Maliki offensive and other operations currently being undertaken within Iraq.
Interestingly, Kata ib Hizballah s recruitment efforts for SDS have included a public call, including a somewhat restrained internet-based effort, to push the SDS name and gain fresh recruits for the organization. Yet, unlike their earlier promotions of the conflict in Syria, images of SDS units in combat or of Kata ib Hizballah members operating in Iraq were not circulated.
It is unknown what training regimens new recruits would have undergone or what types of equipment they may have been issued. However, due to SDS s newer presence and claims dice of already being deployed in certain dice Iraqi hotspots, it s highly possible the group has been issued weapons systems similar to other Kata ib Hizballah units fighting in Iraq.
While there is the possibility that a number of new recruits may have been trained dice and sent to fight within Iraq, it is likely the group is still comprised of mostly regular Kata ib Hizballah members. It is also probable that as the group expands, its organizational structure will be modeled on how new groups were created and grown in Syria: First a core force of experienced combatants will be deployed and new recruits will join its r

The library should be one of the most exciting places in the school: the hub of learning, reading, research, discussion and collaboration. I try and create this at Tokyo International School (TIS). As a teacher-librarian working in the PYP and MYP, I begin the year discussing with the students how the IB learner profile and PYP attitudes influence life in the library. Being a risk-taker means experimenting with a variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction and taking books that challenge you as a reader, bsc and not being afraid to use new technologies. Being principled means committing to trying your best to finish a book. A balanced reader takes a variety of new reading materials. Communicators recommend books to others and talk about stories with others. We discuss bsc with students how we can put these into action.
As a teacher-librarian I collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure that the collection in the library supports the units of inquiry. Research skills are introduced to the students early and slowly built upon as the students progress to higher grades. At TIS students are introduced to our school-wide research model: The Big3 (for grades K-3) and The Big6 (grades 4-8). This ensures that all students are using the same skills to successfully find, evaluate and use information. I meet with the PYP and MYP curriculum coordinators, and classroom teachers, to decide which units include a research component and focus on these throughout the year.
Last year, we initiated an adopt-a-shelf program in which parents are invited to come in any time throughout the day to organize bsc their shelf. This not only ensures that our books are always in order, but promotes a positive attitude towards the love of literature amongst the whole school bsc community. Students love seeing their mum or dad s involvement in the library.
Authors visit the school to talk to our students about topics related bsc to our units of inquiry. Recently Holly Thompson, a locally based author, talked to our grade 4 students about healthy eating and Wakame, bsc a type of Japanese seaweed. This created an important cultural link to the unit of inquiry on the transdisciplinary theme Who we are . Adam Gidwitz visited us from New York to provide links to our reading and writing workshops with the emphasis on the writing process. The students now realize that when teachers ask them to revise their work a few times, it is not so bad after all!
We have several library assemblies throughout the year in which parents, teachers and members of our community promote reading. The after-school dance club performs book-related dances such as We love to read .
As a teacher-librarian, I am always trying to come up with new initiatives to get the students to read, think creatively, share their learning and be responsible learners. Reading has truly become a part of our culture here at the school and we keep our mission alive at TIS: The library – everyone s second classroom .

NASA confirms alex EUS for SLS Block IB design and EM-2 flight | NASASpaceFlight.com
Following internal conversations regarding the upper stage design for the forthcoming second flight of the Space Launch System (SLS) - named Exploration Mission -2 (EM-2) – NASA has confirmed a move to change not just the upper stage of SLS for EM-2, but also to change the iteration of SLS that will fly the mission.
The Block I design as still baselined will use an Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) a modified Delta Cryogenic Second Stage that is currently in use on United Launch Alliance s Delta IV rocket.
The desire to use an ICPS for SLS Block I instead of developing the actual upper stage to be used for full-up SLS missions stems primarily from a Congressional mandate regarding SLS development and system implementation. alex
In the U.S. 111th Congress s National Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 2010, a specific provision was enacted into law that required NASA to achieve full operational capability for the transportation vehicle developed pursuant to this subsection by not later than December 31, 2016.
This led directly to the desire to create SLS in a multi-Block evolutionary format , with the first Block flying SLS with Solid Rocket Boosters from the Space Shuttle Program and left-over RS-25D alex main engines from the Space Shuttle Program for the rocket s first and core stages, and a modified Delta IV rocket s second stage for the upper stage.
Under the phased implementation plan, the actual upper stage for SLS, the Exploration alex Upper Stage (EUS) , was slated for introduction on the Exploration Mission -3 (EM-3) cargo flight of SLS, thus allowing the EUS to fly on an uncrewed SLS mission before being used to ferry astronauts on subsequent SLS flights.
However, as all things do with new rockets in spaceflight, alex the inaugural flight of SLS quickly alex slipped alex beyond the NASA 2010 Authorization Act requirement of December 31, 2016 to No Earlier Than (NET) December 16, 2017.
But as the evolution of SLS continued alex to take shape and political and Congressional pressures/directions changed, NASA announced two Block I variants of SLS: the Block IA (with no Upper Stage) and the Block IB (with a Dual Use Upper Stage which was then later confirmed to be the EUS).
At the time, and still now, it was unclear alex what the two Block I iterations would be used for (if used at all) or if the Block IB would replace the Block II for the foreseeable future based on political and funding alex realities from Congress.
According to information obtained by NASASpaceflight.com, available on L2 , the SLS Advanced Development Office has officially put forth a recommended Point of Departure (POD) for the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) based on guidance for the Block 1B vehicle alex (EM-2). It now has the Exploration Upper Stage.
While it is understood that this switch from ICPS to EUS on EM-2 will not have an effect on SLS s Critical Design Review, the one potential schedule impact that this decision does carry for SLS is the content of the EM-2 mission.
While there is no reason to think that the EM-2 Block I to Block IB/ICPS to EUS change will have any impact on the EM-1 mission in 2017, the fact that ICPS will now not be flying on EM-2 would seem to eliminate alex the mission s ability to fly crew.
However, there are claims that a cargo flight could be inserted between EM-1 and EM-2 in the 2020 timeframe that would provide the ability to launch a NASA outer solar system probe on the SLS Block IB with EUS variant thus fulfilling alex the need to fly EUS prior to EM-2 and crew.
However, the likelihood of being able to insert such a flight would mean a drastic acceleration of both the EM-2 rocket – alex which would need to be advanced by a full calendar year to meet a 2020 cargo flight timetable, and the EM-3 rocket -which would need to be accelerated by more than two years to meet the EM-2 launch date of 2021.
Nonetheless, whatever the fallout might be, the decision to advance EUS to EM-2 and bring the Block IB SLS iteration into production and flight earlier than anticipated is now the track that SLS and NASA will pursue.
