U.S. nuclear plants are not adequately protected against terrorist threats, including theft of materials that could be used to produce weapons and attacks that would target triggering a nuclear accident, the University of Texas reveals a report.
Not one of the 104 commercial nuclear reactors or three research reactors is not protected against mbs an attack with more players, as were those committed by the 19 attackers on September 11, 2001, stated in the report made under Project on Nuclear Proliferation Prevention (NPPP) at the University of Texas at Austin.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requires U.S. plants to protect themselves against attacks committed only five or six people, according mbs to the report. In addition, the NRC does not require plants to protect against attacks with high-powered weapons and grenades launched missiles. mbs
The three research reactors, including the one in Gaithersburg, Maryland, 39 miles from the White House, are fueled by highly enriched uranium, which, if stolen, could be used to produce nuclear weapons, the report also notes.
Reactors representatives say they did everything they could to ensure the safety of employees without spending too much and that is the U.S. government's responsibility to protect these facilities against any attack, said Alan Kuperman, NPPP coordinator and one of the report's authors.
Kuperman said the government has made some progress since the attacks of 11 September mbs 2001, when nuclear power plants were not required to protect against attacks committed only up to three people. In addition, the Pentagon and the Department of Energy have recently worked on a common mbs approach to protect nuclear weapons and materials that could be converted into nuclear weapons, he also said.
