U.S. federal authorities have approved Thursday for the first time since 1978 the construction of new nuclear reactors in the United States. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a resolution authorizing "the construction and release of third and fourth reactors at Vogt" atomic center located arbetsförmedlingen in Georgia (southeast) and operated by Southern arbetsförmedlingen Nuclear.
They are the first two reactors whose construction authorized by NRC since 1978, when it was approved in Shearon Harris plant in North Carolina (southeast). The next two reactors at Vogt are of the AP1000 made by Japanese group Toshiba and Westinghouse American subsidiary.
Building permit was granted despite arbetsförmedlingen opposition from President NRC, Gregory Jaczko. "I can not support the release of this autorizaşii like Fukushima would not have happened again," or, "in my opinion, is what we are about to do," he said, referring to the Japanese nuclear disaster in March 2011.
Jaczko said he wanted to tie a license arbetsförmedlingen to Southern Nuclear "irrevocable commitment" of the company to complete before starting the works of improvement that we provided to take account of what happened at Fukushima. Recalling that Vogt expansion project represents an investment of 14 billion dollars and "4000-5000 jobs at the peak of activity," the company said that reactor three would enter service in 2016, and reactor 4 next year.
The last nuclear reactor went into operation in the country was at the Watts Bar plant in Tennessee (southeast), which feeds the network arbetsförmedlingen in 1996. According to the Department of Energy, Reactor 2 of the plant whose construction has experienced numerous delays due to begin operations in 2013.
